With the heat being what it was (and me being such a baby about it) the Partner in Crime and I decided to get out of Dodge and see if we could cool down. A Googling of state parks + swimming led us to Hanging Rock State Park (the closest contender).
Before heading out though, we had to stop at the pharmacy to pick some stuff up. Imagine my glee (not) upon seeing this:
Yeah, I know we got a late start. But it's a weekend. And we're gay. And it's hot. But seriously -- 102!?!? No way!
Anyway. When we got there we were delayed by some serious motorcycle ride -- at which point the PIC noticed the sign for Priddy's -- this wicked cool old general store he'd read about somewhere on the web. It lived up to the hype (no wicked cool t-shirts to buy though -- they need someone to come up with a better graphic) and the woman behind the register (who happened also to be the mayor of Danbury) tipped us off to the Lower Cascade -- a little waterfall with a pool at the bottom. This was handy, since we'd already learned from the park's website that the swimming lake would not be open until June 11 (an end of school thing -- don't ask me).
The Lower Cascade was a little bit of a hike:
A little small and overrun with rugrats, we decided to stay only about 20 minutes.
Continuing our exploration of that part of the Dan River, we encountered my first local snake:
PIC says 3' -- I say closer to 4'. He says "dead" -- I say "alive". Regardless, the pic was taken from the car and the snake was not in place when we drove back through.
I'm not missing it.
We continued driving around, making our way back home. And landed in the city at about 7:30 -- passing by our current favorite movie theater.
"Let's stop in," I say. We do, and made it just in time for a showing of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Upon arriving home, we discovered that my anniversary present to PIC had finally arrived (somewhat belatedly) -- a bound copy of photos from our first year together courtesy of Shutterfly. I have to say, I was quite impressed. So was he.
All in all, a good day.
