First, we gave her the nickel tour of downtown. Well, not even quite -- maybe the half-penny tour. One of our favorite buildings is the RJ Reynolds Building. It's now vacant, I guess. They're moving everyone into the Reynolds American building next door. Too bad though, 'cause there's some interesting history behind that building.
Next, it was off to Mayberry Ice Cream Parlor. She'd been referred there by someone who went to college here. Much yumminess -- so much for my lactose intolerance. (Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do when there's company in town.)
Next up, Pilot Mountain (we take just about everybody there, it's quite fabby -- and remember, this is Nature Girl we're talking about). Fortunately for everyone involved, the fall foliage was in high gear and it was warm, warm warm! 72 degrees! I know... right? "Take that, New England!"
As a lovely coincidence, we ran into one of the PIC's work buddies who belongs to a local astronomy club. He let us look through his specially-equipped telescope at the sun! Wicked cool! So we could check out these huge fireball things shooting off it. I thoroughly recommend it.
Sunday morning comes (thank you, Mother for reminding me about Daylight Savings Time), and the line at our new favorite breakfast place was way too long to tolerate. So we headed off to The Old 4th Street Filling Station where we were seated under some lovely umbrellas (yes, 70+ degree weather once again) and had a lovely breakfast/brunch.
We will definitely go back there, especially when there is company in town.
Then over to quaint Old Salem. Read about it here, we've been several times. More foliage.
And finally, we ended the weekend with the now-traditional stop at the old Shell station.
I love that place because it reminds me of Americana, kitsch, and all-things-oversized.
The Partner in Crime likes it because of his fondness for all things automotive.
Nature Girl is invited to come stay any time she likes!
