It is with great sadness we report the demise of "Charlotte" the unknown-type spider who'd taken up residence on the ceiling of our front porch. Charlotte was big, Charlotte was scary, Charlotte provided us with endless minutes of entertainment. After some initial trepidation ("ew, there's a big hairy spider on the porch!"), we got used to her.
Charlotte's life ran its course, she weaved, she ate, she hid. And then one day she was gone. Reduced to a crumpled pile of spider carcass on the porch. Not long after that, she was gone again -- food for a colony of ants who live somewhere in the vicinity. Seriously, about 36 hours after we first noticed her body, there was nary a trace of her. Such is the cycle of life.
